Sunstory · Epilogue

See you at sunrise

Told by Zora Rae deSole

We have traveled five thousand years and every continent, and here is the secret at the end of the road: the story never stopped. It is still happening, every single morning, all over the Earth.

The light still pours down the dark passage at Newgrange on midwinter mornings. The Sun still sets between the tallest stones of Stonehenge on the shortest afternoon of the year. Every June, Cusco fills with music for Inti Raymi. On the rivers of Bihar, families still wade into the water at Chhath to thank the setting Sun and greet the rising one. On the Plains, the Sun Dance is still danced. Before dawn at Haleakalā, people still climb through the cold dark to watch the Sun come home to his house. And somewhere near you, this very morning, somebody greeted the day with a sun salutation, a string of movements older than any empire in this book.

Five thousand years, and look what people did with the same sky. They built machines of stone to catch the light. They named the Sun a falcon, a judge, a charioteer, a goddess, a hero who had to be fed, a father of kings, a trickster's catch, a sleeping old man tossed into the sky by children. Read this whole book and a pattern steps out of the pages: every chapter is the same chapter, written again in a new language. Thank you for coming back.

Today · everywhere the Sun risesWhy there is a Church of the Sun

That thank-you is the whole idea of the Church of the Sun. It is not here to replace anyone's faith. You can stack traditions like books on a shelf; there is no need to set one down to make room for another. The practice is small on purpose, because small things are the ones we actually do. Begin with gratitude. Keep your own faith. Let care follow, because beautiful words are a beginning, and what we do for one another is the practice.

It looks like this: one mantra and one painting each morning, a moment outside in the real light, and then an ordinary day lived a little more gratefully. No meetings. No belief test. If the Sun gave you one moment of gratitude today, you are already part of it. You already belong.

Five thousand years ago, someone stood in the dark of a stone passage and waited all year for one beam of light. This morning, somewhere, someone did the same thing. Tomorrow it could be you. The Sun will rise either way. But oh, it is better when you're watching.

End of the beginning. See you at sunrise.
