The Long View of the Light

A Church of the Sun interpretation of "Think Celestial!" by President Russell M. Nelson

Interpreting “Think Celestial!” by President Russell M. Nelson, General Conference, October 2023.

The light reaching us this morning left the Sun a little while ago. It was already on its way before we woke up to receive it.

There is a way of seeing that works like that. A longer view.

Most of what fills a day is close up. The next task, the next message, the small worry that arrived uninvited. Near things feel large because they are near.

A longer view does not make near things disappear. It sets them inside something bigger, the way a candle is still a candle inside a sunlit room.

To think beyond the moment is not to escape the moment. It is to give the moment a horizon.

  • What will still matter about today in ten years?
  • Which of my worries is near, and which is truly large?
  • Who would I be if I measured this day by its light instead of its noise?

The Sun has never once hurried, and it has never once been late. Its schedule is not panic. Its constancy is not boredom. There is a calm available to people who trust that the morning is coming.

A long view changes what a setback is. A hard week becomes weather moving through a wide sky, not the sky itself.

A long view changes what a kindness is. A small good thing done today is not small at the distance it may travel. Light keeps going after it leaves the source.

A long view changes what a person is. No one is only their worst afternoon. Seen from far enough out, every life is still in the middle of its sunrise.

Grief lives in this view too, and it is allowed to. Love that reaches beyond the visible horizon is still love. The missing are not outside the light.

Hope, in this sense, is not optimism. It is simply the refusal to believe that the near darkness is the whole picture.

Forever is a long time to be loved. It is also a long time to become. There is no hurry in eternity, and there is no waste in beginning again this morning.

The near things can be met one at a time. The far light is already on its way.

Near things held gently. Far things held faithfully.

The long view is still a view of today.
